10 Years

by Fat Daddy, Esq. on September 1, 2011

Hot Mama and I recently celebrated our ten year wedding anniversary and I have been reflecting a lot on where we have been, where we are, and where we are going to be in the future.

This is my favorite picture from that day. The wedding was in July which usually spells oppressive heat but the weather that evening was wonderful. My wife always says it was a gift from her father who passed away a few years before he was able to walk her down the aisle.

We were both young, fresh-faced kids ready to take on the next chapter in our lives together. I was starting law school in the fall, she would start her job as an emergency room nurse. We had talked about kids but none would occur for three more years. Now we have two beautiful girls and a quite handsome son.

I don’t remember any longer what we were talking about while the photo was snapped, but I have always thought myself somewhat witty and luckily she usually feels the same. Her laugh is one of my favorite sounds to hear and I am thankful that I am still able to make her laugh daily ten years later.

There have been rough patches through the years, especially after the birth of each of our children when our roles get redefined and our sleep gets deprived. One resource I came across in the midst of a funk after the birth of our middle child was a podcast fromĀ One Extraordinary Marriage. A helpful book we read recently after the birth of our youngest is Love in the Time of Colic: The New Parents’ Guide to Getting It On Again. Marriage is hard work, but it is worth it and there are wonderful resources all around to help along the way.

We have a really great thing going and with marriages in turmoil all around us, we pull closer to each other and appreciate what a wonderful commitment we share.

To my wife, thank you for putting up with my imperfections and know that I love you with all of my heart. It is hard to predict where this blog will be in 40 years, but here’s hoping there is a post in the future with a picture of you laughing at our golden anniversary celebration.

I love you more than is probably appropriate to say on here. You are my world and I’m quite happy having it that way.
